In the mid-1970s, Porsche had new plans for the future development of the 911. In 1977, Porsche launched the 928 with an eight-cylinder engine as the new top model. The 928 was well received in the professional field, but consumers did not agree, so Porsche engineers quickly focused on improving the 911. So the original G-series 911 Speedster was born, featuring two seats, an emergency roof and a neat retractable windscreen, all in the style of Porsche’s legendary 356 Speedster.
Starting from the code-named 964 series in 1989, the 911 began to be updated and upgraded. 85% of the components from the engine, drive device, steering transmission system, axles, hubs, tires, ventilation equipment and air conditioners have been newly developed. From this moment, Porsche is equipped with ABS and airbags in batches for the first time. All-wheel drive is also available on the 911 Carrera 4.
Beginning with the codename 993 series in 1993, the 911 featured significantly softer body lines, rounder fenders, sloping oval headlights, a sliding rear spoiler and a wider rear. The 993 series was the last to be equipped with an air-cooled six-cylinder engine.
Starting with the codenamed 996 series in 1997. For the first time, Porsche is equipped with a water-cooled six-cylinder engine in series. The change was made to comply with exhaust emission standards set globally.
In 1998, the displacement of the six-cylinder engine of the Porsche 911 Carrera was increased to 3.4L, and the power reached 300 horsepower.
In 2002, the six-cylinder engine had a displacement of 3.6L and a power of 320 horsepower. It was later joined by the 911 GT3, 911 Turbo and 911 GT2.
On September 17, 2004, Porsche released the 997 series 911, and only two versions of Carrera and Carrera S were produced. The maximum power of the 997 series Carrera and Carrera S reached 239kW and 261kW, and the maximum torque reached 380Nm and 400Nm respectively. The biggest change in power is that the Carrera S model adopts a 3.8L boxer engine for the first time.
